The Thong has Gone a Long Way

Seamless, crotchless, backless... never has a piece of fabric - or lack thereof - created as much sensation. The early 90s saw the rise of the thong - a sliver of fabric leading to a sexy V-shape at the back. The thong, or tanga as the Brazilians dubbed it, promised zero panty lines and plenty of sex appeal.
Its successors have included the G-string, bikini, brief, boyleg and high rise cut. But, despite what men's magazines would have us believe, it seems the average woman is no longer baring her cheeks in next to nothing lingerie. We still see women buying conventionally sexy G-strings but these days it's more about comfort. Boylegs are becoming more popular, especially the seamless variety.
Full coverage seamless boy shorts are also now available, ruling out the visible panty line problem. Remember Sex and the City's Carrie walking around her apartment in boyish Y-fronts, Cameron Diaz's boy shorts in Charlie's Angels and Bridget Jones's granny pants? It seems even Hollywood is saying, 'So long, thong...'
Bet your Bottom Dollar
So what's in a thong? Well, there's not much to it. Fabric, that is. But there is big money. In the early noughties, big business caught on to what a hit the lacy skivvies were. So did Hollywood. Sisqo released the irritatingly catchy 'Thong Song' in 2000. The same year Britney Spears released her second album and sexed up new image. As she purred on 'Oops... I did it again', a nation of teenage girls copied her low rise jeans and high rise thong look and imitated the accidentally on purpose thong flash. Two years later, a record 123 million thongs were sold in the US, more than double the number sold in 1998. American retail giant Abercrombe and Fitch even released a line of thongs targeted at 10 - 16 year old girls.
This year, online store cafepress reported that, with regards to political merchandise, thongs that are pro Barack Obama are ahead in sales, while Hilary Clinton has taken the lead in men's boxer sales. Then there's the whole underwear-as-outwear controversy. Blame it on Christina Aguilera. Remember her Dirty music video in 2002, which featured the singer in a boxing ring wearing cowboy leather chaps minus the crotch bit? In 2007 she released a follow up track, 'Still Dirrty', and vowed that she'll still be dirty at 60.
Not all thong wearers are created equal. While Christina might look cracking in a next to nothing leather number, Kim Kardashian might not. Thongs do not support even the slightest bit of junk in your trunk, as Jimmy Fallon sang in his Sisqo spoof 'Please don't wear that Thong: It shows off ya belly roll, don't wear that thong, thong, thong'.
The Future is Slight
Even though the thong may not be as popular now as it was when it first hit the shelves, it seems it's here to stay. Admittedly it's undergone a makeover of sorts - the thong of today bears little resemblance to the one that made its appearance in the early 90s. In 2004 an Australian invention called the backless thong appeared. Unlike the conventional thong, the back straps fit under the crease of the butt cheeks and the side strings fasten like bra straps around the hips.
Then there's the Cstring, which looks like an Alice band except one side has a gusset and the other a string. A built in wire keeps the thong in place, as there are no straps around the hips. It shows no panty line because, well, there are none. It's like a cricket box with a strip up the back. You can see it at Cstringdirect's website.

G-Strings: What Goes Around Comes Around

The g-string is an undergarment that gets strong positive or negative reviews, but never just a shrug. The odd thing about this form of lingerie panty is it has been with us a very long time.
The first thing to understand about the g-string is it is worn by both men and women. Western media tends to highlight the lingerie aspects of women over men, so many men do not realize that saying they "like g-strings" can sometimes infer that they actually like wearing them!
The g-string has traveled a long way through time as a fashion garment. A form of the g-string was man's first piece of clothing. Research has found the first clothing originated in sub-Sahara Africa roughly 75,000 years ago and, you guessed it, a variation of the g-string was found to be the undergarment of choice. The loin cloth, after all, is nothing more than a g-string with a bit of extra material around it. As mankind advanced, g-strings disappeared from the scene, but have made a huge comeback in the last thirty years or so.
These days, g-strings always get a reaction. Some women love to wear them while others find them very uncomfortable. A vast majority of men seem to find them irresistible, which might say something deep and scholarly since they probably originated from the Stone Age. You can insert your own joke here!
The modern G-string blurs the lines of panty fashion. I've referred to them as lingerie in this article, but they can be viewed as a simple panty. They can also be used as the bottoms of a bikini bathing suit. Many refer to them as "thongs" as well, but this is not entirely accurate. A g-string is actually a type of thong, but most people just use the terms interchangeably.
The advantages of wearing g-strings are clearly defined. They are considered highly seductive and perfect for evenings when you want to look your best. They are also favored because they leave no panty line since the rear area is simply a string of sorts. This combination has made the g-string one of the strongest selling undergarments of this decade.
There are, of course, disadvantages as well. One simply has to do with comfort. Many women find the sensation of the g-string to uncomfortable. On a more objective level, the close fit of the garment has also raised some health warnings related to infections. Many gynecologists now recommend g-strings not be worn for more than six to eight hours and that they be washed frequently.
Is a g-string in your future? The only way to know is to try one on and see how you feel. Some women love them and some do not. It is purely a matter of choice.

History of the Brazilian Bikini

arr
When you say the word bikini, it no longer translates to the one invented in 1946 by Louis Reard and donned by Micheline Bernardini. A string bikini, it was far ahead of its time in the fashion world and banned in many countries. The United States would shun the bikini, of any sort, for over a decade, reasoning that any decent person would never wear such a thing. It was 1957 when the US finally adopted it. Even then, you would have to thank the entertainment industry for bringing it to the mainstream, such as Brian Hyland's "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" pop song, which fueled a buying frenzy in our country for the first time in 1960. The big screen movies came next and the American Bikini has been a mainstay ever since.
Today, a new style of bikini is being adopted in a lot of the same manner as the original. The Brazilian Bikini is now being worn by celebrities on the big screen, changing people's perception of the more revealing swimwear, much the same as the big screen in the 1960's. Expect the revealing swimwear trend to continue for quite some time, as our culture has opened itself to the Brazilian way of sunbathing.
While celebrities have done a lot to bring the Brazilian Bikini to the forefront of the American mainstream, you cannot discuss the invasion without acknowledging the Brazilian Wax, as the two seem to go hand in hand. The cut of the Brazilian Bikini bottoms, all three of them, requires hair removal in places you might never have even considered before, with the assistance of warm wax.
The Brazilian Bikini bottom has a signature cut of being very high on the hips, barely covering the pelvic bone in the front. In the back, the three different bottoms are revealing, more revealing and very revealing. It begins with the Tanga, which offers moderate coverage on each side in the back. The Asa Delta, brings the strip in the back in much closer, just short of a thong. Then, the Fio Dental is literally "dental floss" in the rear.
The Brazilian Tops, like the bottoms, leave little to the imagination. There are three styles, with the same basic goal: sunbathing taken very seriously. The Triangle top covers the breast area with two fabric cups, shaped like a triangle, connected with strings that tie at the neck and back. The Halter top has the same shape, but it uses more fabric. The top is not conservative, though. Instead it is basically worn by those with a larger bust to keep them from "falling out". The Bandeau is a slender tube top, which fastens in the middle of the back, with or without ties to the neck.
Which ever top or bottom is chosen, the result is the same, a more revealing bikini that celebrates the female anatomy. This is certainly not the bathing suit for everybody, but for the select few who adopt the Brazilian Swimsuit, expect them to exude confidence and to have a sense for adventure.

Microkini

A microkini is an extremely skimpy bikini. The designs for both women and men typically use only enough fabric to cover the genitalia. Any additional straps are merely to keep the garment attached to the wearer's body. Some variations of the microkini use adhesive or wire to hold the fabric in place over the genitals. These designs do not require any additional side straps to keep the garment in place. The most radical variations of the microkini are simply thin straps which cover little or none of the wearer's body. The term "microkini" was coined in 1995 in an online community dedicated to enthusiasts of the extreme designs. Microkinis fill a niche between nudism and conservative swimwear. In addition to keeping the wearer just within legal limits of decency, they have also evolved to become the ultimate in provocative sun wear.
The modern microkini's origins can be traced back to the early-1970's in Venice Beach, California, US, where, after legislation was passed banning nudity there, beach regulars began making their own tiny bathing suits to comply with the new laws. The homemade suits were often little more than tiny, remnant pieces of fabric, crudely sewn together with thin twine or fishing line. Then around 1975, a local bikini shop picked up on the idea and began to make more practical styles using modern materials. Soon after, several adult film actresses began wearing the shop's suits in their films and the style began to catch on.[citation needed] Pubikini, an extreme form of microkini, is another bathing suit created by Rudi Gernreich. The pubikini is a small piece of fabric that hugs the hips and buttocks but leaves the pubic region exposed.

About Bikini

A bikini or two-piece is a type of women's swimsuit, characterized by two separate parts — one covering the breasts (optionally in the case of the Monokini), the other the groin (and optionally the buttocks), leaving an uncovered area between the two garments. It is often worn in hot weather or while swimming. The shapes of both parts of a bikini closely resemble women's underwear, and the lower part of a bikini can therefore range from the more revealing thong or g-string, to briefs, and modest square-cut shorts.
Bikini was invented by French engineer Louis Réard in 1946 and he named it after the Bikini Atoll, which was the site of a nuclear weapon test called Operation Crossroads on July 1, 1946 in the Pacific. The reasoning for the name was that the burst of excitement created by it would be like a nuclear device. Monokini, a bikini variant, derives its name, as a back formation, from bikini, interpreting the first syllable as the Latin prefix bi- (meaning "two" or "doubled") and substituting for it mono- (meaning "one"). Jacques Heim called his bikini precursor the Atome (named for its size), while Louis Réard claimed to have "split the Atome" to make it smaller.
Bikini is the most popular beachwear around the globe, which is, according to French fashion historian Olivier Saillard, due to "the power of women, and not the power of fashion", as he explains, ""The emancipation of swimwear has always been linked to the emancipation of women."By mid 2000s, these two-piece bathing suits eveolved into an US$ 811 million business annually, according to the NPD Group, a consumer and retail information company. The bikini has boosted spin-off services like bikini waxing and the sun tanning industries.
